Following the recent closing of the Village Bike Shop in Westport MA, the fate of the annual Sunday ride has come into question. It was widely recognized as one of the best local regular summertime group rides and was even once featured in Bicycling Magazine.
While the shop no longer exists, this is no reason to discontinue the ride. It has been a great south coast summer tradition and would typically meet at 8:00 am. There were fast and slow groups, with distances ranging from 40 -60 miles.
I have spoken with several people who are interested in keeping the ride going but there are questions about wether the land lord of the old bike shop building would be cool with having people park there (for the time being the building is empty, so that is a maybe).
If a business does move in that is not open on Sundays then, its possible that we could work something out. Lee's Market is another possible meeting place that is discussed, but a group of ridders reported that they were asked to not park in the lot after going on a ride (the lot is small and fills up in the summer). The other two main Possibilities are Westport High and Westport Middle school, where parking will not be an issue.
If you have done this ride in years past and want to keep it going, this is the place to make your voice heard, organize meeting places and times, and keep the tradition going.
Hope to see you out on the road this summer.
